Cilia and Flagella
Cilia and Flagella are microscopic hair like motil structure present extracellularly but orignate intracellulary from basal body and help in locomotion, movement, feeding, circulation etc. Cilia and Flagella are similar structure producing out from the cell surface. It consists of pair of central filaments surrounded by nine peripheral filaments which shows nine plue two arangement. Each peripheral microtubes is douplet and is formed of two subtubules A and B. A subtubules has two latral arms which is composed of dynein protin and capable of hydrolysing ATP. The central microtubles connected to the A microtubules by radial spokes. Movement of cilia and flagella is due to ATP which is supplied from the cytoplasm. Chemically the Centeral microtuble made up of dyneninprotin and peripheral mocrotubules composed of tubulin protin.Cilia is very fine hair like structure about 5-10um long. It is found many in number and covered the entire surface of cell. Cilia distributed on whole body. It show rowing movement. Helps in locomotion, feeding, circulation etc. Flagella is long structure about 150um.Few in numbers and may also occurs singly. Flagella located at the anteriorend of the body. It show undulatory movement.Helps only in locomotion.
Cilia and flagella help in locomotion, movement, feeding etc of cell or organells. In the respiratory tract the ciliary movement help in elimination of solid particles from it. Cilia of kidney helpin nephric filteration. Cilia of larva help in their dispersal.
