Steward Experiment

Steward and his co-workers in 1950 took a small piece from the phloem tissue of carrot root and put them in liquid medium containing coconut milk as a growth harmon. By shaking the medium all cells separated from one another. Some of them multiply and formed roots. Then, these were transferred into another test tube that contains semisolid medium of the same composition. After some time it grow and differenciate and form a nuw plant. This, newly plant when transferred into pot.It grow into new flowering plant.

 These experiment concluded that every somatic cell have the capacity to grow into a whole plant or organism.This is call the cellular totipotency.It is the ability of living somatic cells to form into a complete plant or organism which was 1st purposed by Haberland in 1902.
